May 1862 Home W. 14 Martial law went into operation in Charleston yesterday at 12 M. Co1. Johnson Hagood has been appointed by Gen. Pemherton Provost Marshal in command of the city. Richardson Miles, A H. Brown & Lartigue are assistant marshals. Ingress & Egress from the city is now restricted to certain points, viz the three Rail roads & the main road where it passes the fortifications at RikerVille. Boats & vessells are to leave certain wharves only. All passengers by Rail Road & otherwise are required to have a passport, the office for which is opened every day at certain hours. All owners of salt (for sale) are required to report to the Marshall the quantity in hand & the place of its storage under penalty of its forfeiture. No more salt is allowed to be sent out of the city without express permission 5.PM. Nothing specially important in the papers today. Gen. Butler in New Orleans is trying to induce the people to trade & the planters to send in cotton. He will fail in this, & find his victory barren of all
