by all the churches for humiliation & prayer under proclamation of the President
5.P.M. News from Corinth May 19 - "Capt Morgan on the 11th destroyed 53 loaded cars on the Louisville & Nashville R. R. & seized $50000 in money. He is now in Kentucky where a great reaction is going on, which may revolutionize the state." From Richmond May 21 - "The following official despatch was received yesterday at the War office 'By the co-operation of Gen. Humphrey Marshall Cox has been driven from this section of country (near New river Va) losing many prisoners, his entire camp & garrison equipage, baggage &c H. Heth Brig. Commandg'" also another official despatch stating that the Federal army in New Mexico had beend defeated & routed, & 500 prisoners captured. The fight occurred on 25th March, three miles East of Santa Fe which is now the head quarters of the Confederate army."
Butlers infamous order at New Orleans is commented on by the press at the South, in the highest spirit of indignation.

F. 23 My father today completes his 72nd year. His health for several months past is impaired. I think the anxiety attending the war, & uncertainty as to the fate of Charleston
