Greeneville S.C. 1884 July T.29 I reached this place yesterday afternoon about 8 PM, having left Aiken at 8 PM, on down train & connecting in Columbia at 12.50 with C & G. R. R. I am stopping with Mrs Mary Cleveland near R R. Depot. Met Rawson & Roche on train, & had a talk as to our plans of operation Col. Butler is still detained by the illness of his son, but Rawson & Roche are both connected with Ag. Dpt. The Ag. & Mech. Society held their first meeting at Court House. Met this morning, Ed. Croft, Mr Capers & Mr Markley. Mrs Cleveland's family consist of herself her daughter & her son in law Harris who married her daughter. They are all very kind to me - & I already feel easy & at home. They are most estimable people - & I congratulate myself upon the good fortune which brought me to their house W.30 Mr. Harris is extremely deaf, but by the aid of his book & pencil, we get along well. His family communicate by sign language. Yesterday afternoon he gave me a drive for about 2 hours, all around & through the city. Called Mr and Mrs Capers, but they were not a home. This morning attended Exhibition of fruits & vegetables at Town Hall. Th.31 I expect to leave on the 10 A M train & hope to make connection at GraniteVille with the S C. 10.30 P M train for Aiken. Yesterday afternoon Mr Markley drove me out to Woods Camp ponds about 4 miles East of Greene Ville - 6 ponds altogether. On returning took tea with Mr Markleys family Aiken S. C. F. August 1st. Reached home 1ast night about 10.30 via GraniteVille. Found all well. I have written today to Rawson of Ag. Dpt. in Columbia, & sent him a form of "Circular" to be printed & sent out to a11 who will be likely to assist in collecting specimens of woods, grasses & hay plants &c. When the responses come in, we will then make a good start.
