& leave Savannah in the afternoon by c'teamer for Darien

Darien Ga.
S. 12 I reached Darien this morning in Steamer Florida at 4 AM. - waited at Depot until daylight & walked up to Harry's where I am now. I found the family all well, & two grand children I had not seen before. Harry is comfortably fixed here, near to his business. I arrived in Savannah yesterday morning to breakfast & went to Mrs Heywards where I spent the day, leaving in the afternoon at 3 P.M. It has been raining all morning, & now clearing up.

Sunday 13.	Bright & warm spring day! Robt Gignilliat & his son Willie stopped here yesterday afternoon on their way to WoodVille to see me. Robert invited me to go out to WoodVille before I left.
I have been making inquiries about Gordonia pubescens, & have great hopes of being able to find it. Old Fort Barrington (where John Bartram discovered it about 150 years ago on his travels through S.C. Ga & Florida) is about 14 miles up the river. Harry says he will make arrangements to take me up there in a few days. This tree has not been seen since & no living botanist has ever found it in the uncultivated State. There are a few trees in gardens in Europe descended from seeds which Bartram distributed at the time to friends in England. Fort Barrington was then used as a frontier post against the Indians & Spaniards of Florida, & it is probable Bartram stopped there to botanize in safety during his travels.

M. 14 I hired a horse & buggy this morning - & rode out on the "Stage Road" for 4 or 5 miles & then returned by the "River Road" - hunting for
